Gordon's Gin
Gordon's Gin
Gordon's Gin are delighted to partner The Gordon Ramsay Scholar Award 2008. The 'colourful flavour' of Gordon's comes from a delicate balance of botanicals giving it it's juniper bite and herbal notes, not too sweet, with a cleansing refreshing citrus character.
In 1769, Alexander Gordon was another Scot with a mission. While men such as Captain James Cook were discovering New Zealand, he was exploring the world for the perfect botanicals (herbs and spices) for Gordon's Gin
He tried many ingredients and recipes before finally deciding on one particular style he called Special London Dry Gin. It did exactly what it said on the bottle. It was special, it was distilled in London, and it was dry. The recipe has remained unchanged since 1769.
The recipe for Gordon's Gin is known to only 12 people in the world. It includes juniper, coriander seeds, angelica root and other botanicals that remain a secret. Whole spices and berries are matured for 18 long months for that distinctive and sophisticated Gordon's Gin taste. In fact of every 100 juniper berries collected, only 10 are deemed good enough to use. For over 200 years, the recipe has remained a closely guarded secret (though not by the same 12 people, obviously).
In the 19th century glass technology was not at the cutting edge. Only green glass could be produced in volume, hence our familiar square green bottle with its distinctive black and white label.
In 1908, we received our first big export order from Australia and, to mark the occasion, produced a limited edition bottle. It was made from clear glass and was such a success that we decided that in future all export bottles would be perfectly clear glass while in the UK, our gin would always be in its traditional green bottle. We do hope we've made ourselves clear.
Did you know that 99 Gordon's Gin and Tonics are made every single minute? If you can't beat them, why not join them and exclusively sample Gordon's Gin with Gordon Ramsay at The Gordon Ramsay Scholar Award 2008.
